Glacier Bay

Leslee Jaquette

Brisk winds, whitecaps and six-foot seas. Throw in a picnic lunch and you've got ideal conditions for "go anywhere, go anytime" Glacier Bay catamaran owners. These people love their boats because they can go out when most others huddle at the docks.

Capitalizing on the smooth-ride of twin hulls, a group of Glacier Bay owners seized the day last September for a 50-mile circle cruise of Washington State's San Juan Islands.

The 30 boaters and 11 catamarans were participants in the First Annual Glacier Bay Rendezvous sponsored by the I-90 Marine Center. Cheryl and Steve Waltz of the Issaquah, WA-based dealership hosted the event.

Like "tornado chasers," Glacier Bay owners, family members and factory representatives raced to get underway after rushing through breakfast and grabbing leftovers for lunch. Leaving the protection of Deer Harbor on Orcas Island, the day was spent slicing through waves, hiking on Sucia Island and snacking on ice cream cones at Roche Harbor on San Juan Island.

In spite of (or more probably, because of) the nasty conditions, one seasoned veteran ran down mighty Haro Strait in his 26-foot Glacier Bay to do some orca whale watching. Through the spray and waves, he and his crew were rewarded with sightings of an 86-whale "super pod."

Catherine and Leonard Goode, . members from Texas, spend half the year fishing and cruising in their Glacier Bay 2670 Isle Runner from their second home near Campbell River in British Columbia. To join the rendezvous, the Goodes ran Chica's twin 150 Suzukis the entire 180 miles to Deer Harbor, averaging 26 knots during the demanding eight-and-a-half-hour run.

"I love our boat because it's safe and comfortable," said Catherine Goode. "We wanted something we could live with and manage easily for day fishing trips or overnight cruising."

Americans living in Victoria, British Columbia, Nat and Leslie Klein explained that before buying their Glacier Bay 2690 Coastal Runner they conducted extensive research on multihulls in general and Glacier Bay in particular. The company builds 22- to 34-footers.

These . members were sold on what they learned about the toughness, craftsmanship and ride of the boats. When the Kleins joined the rendezvous, they had just completed the boat's inaugural two-week cruise.

"We looked for a powerboat with stability, speed and quality and we found it in Glacier Bay," said Nat Klein, who laughed as he added. "At six-feet, five-inches, it's pretty amazing to find any berth that sleeps me in comfort, but our 26-footer's queen berth is designed for big people. It's wonderful."

. members Al and Mary Schwartz motored their 2000-built, 2690 Coastal Runner Nauti-Cat from their home on Lake Washington near Seattle. That 100-mile trip north was small potatoes.

After the rendezvous, Schwartz organized an annual, five-day, fishing trip. The "girls" would return to civilization, while the "boys" went to the salmon fishing Mecca of Sekui, WA.

"I especially like the ruggedness," said Schwartz, who downsized from a 50-foot Ocean Alexander when he purchased the Glacier Bay. "The Strait of Juan de Fuca can be tough, it's 60 nautical miles out to the Pacific. With this boat, if I want to go fishing, I'm not intimidated."

Another experienced boater, anesthesiologist Jim Robb, also recently downsized from a 42-foot yacht to a new Glacier Bay 2690 Coastal Runner. The . member trailered Deuce from his home in Portland, OR, to a launch ramp near the islands. He was thrilled with the big cat's ease of launching and its performance in rough seas.

An aggressive boater who likes the option of single-handing, Robb summarized the rendezvous participants' on-going delight with their "go anywhere, go anytime" Glacier Bay catamarans.

"I wanted quality and I'm real impressed," observed Robb with a grin. "There is no hanging when you go over a wave; there is no crashing, no banging and no white knuckles. It's amazing how these cats slice through the water."
